just off Lhotsky Street and Sports Way
The Charnwood Community Garden is situated off Sports Way off Lhotsky Street in Charnwood, ACT. The garden held an open day on Sunday 15 March 2020 to raise community awareness of the benefits of growing vegetables and fruit organically, and to raise a little money for the garden. We had many stalls: BBQ, curry and roti, morning and afternoon tea, Canberra Seed Savers and a lucky dip for children. There was also a produce stall selling jams, chutneys, comfrey cream, plants, seeds, seedlings, cakes, biscuits, and fruit and vegetables harvested on the day. The latter being most popular. Our garden made $1270.
The day was sunny with a light breeze. Perfect. We had over 160 persons greeted at the front gate, then wander through the garden. Among them were ex gardeners, current gardeners, locals, adults, teenagers, children, and politicians. Of the politicians there was Shane Rattenbury, Alistair Coe, Tara Cheyne and Kacey Lam. They were impressed with the pride that plot holders took in their individual plots and the variety of produce grown. Above all they enjoyed engaging with everyone at the garden and were in no hurry to leave. I think the take home message for everyone was that our garden, and others, are a most valuable community resource that provides not only healthy organic produce but a spirit of harmony amongst its members and in the welcoming of the broader community.
We welcome COGS members, families, friends and locals to our community garden OPEN DAY.
There will be refreshments and a BBQ available, as well as freshly baked goods (cakes, slices and scones), plants, seeds, fruit, vegetables and preserves. All proceeds will go back into the garden. Why not take some time out and come and relax with us!
