The Oaks Estate Community Garden was started in the early 1990s and is located on the corner of Railway & River Streets, adjoining Gillespie Park.

There are 24 plots varying in size from 10 m2 to 40 m2. with well-drained sandy soil requiring mulch (and more mulch!), however this makes for light work when digging. Plot holders are responsible for the maintenance of their own plots, however there is a communal gardening area for all to enjoy and use. Ongoing maintenance of the communal area such as mowing paths and weeding is conducted through working bees in which all plot holders are expected to participate.

Oaks Estate is one of the oldest settled parts of the ACT. “The Oaks” is a heritage-listed property dating back to the 1830s and is located a short distance from the garden. The story of how a (very small) part of Queanbeyan township was sliced off when the ACT was established is another and later chapter of its interesting history (see below).

Keeping connected to the local community is very important to us. We welcome visitors and hold occasional open days. If interested, please contact us, and arrange a visit so that we can show you what our garden can offer you. We welcome all gardeners from the young to the not-so-young!
