Charnwood Community Garden was established in 1991 and comprises 51 inground plots, 5 raised garden beds for physically challenged persons, 3 orchards and 3 communal flower beds. It has a shelter, toolshed, frog pond and playground for small children.

The inground plots range in area from 17 to 100 square metres and each raised garden bed is 5 square metres. We have a broad range of ages that work these plots in accordance with COGS and local garden rules.

A number of gardeners have shown their handy person skills in recent years through the building of a beautiful shelter which has large timber supports sourced from an old wharf from the south coast and the 5 raised beds. Both were funded through a combination of the ACT Government Community Garden grants program, COGS funding, and, in the case of the shelter, members’ fundraising efforts through Bunnings BBQs. The Shelter provides a focal point for social gatherings and events.

The Garden is a warm and friendly place where gardeners engage in working bees, meetings, interesting projects, social gatherings, and community outreach. The waiting list for a plot at the Charnwood Garden fluctuates throughout the year.
